the visual documentation of creativity in the making.

02
in defense of process

obrar arises from the desire to bring process back into the forefront of creation. In today’s highly technologically driven world, obrar is interested in lifting the veil of creative processes.

The illustrated books edited and published by obrar shed light on creative processes, taking the meaning of the word ‘work’ as both action and final piece, exploring the art of making.

about

We are a publishing project devoted to creativity in the making. Through thoughtfully designed books, we celebrate not just what artists create, but how they create it.

We believe that understanding the process deepens our connection to the work.

In Spanish, obrar is a verb that means to do, to make, to build, to act. Within it lives the word obra: a creation, a body of work. It is also the name given to a place under construction: the building site, the space in progress.

the finished work (obra) and the act of making it (obrar) are inherently connected. the process and the product are one and the same.

But in much of the cultural landscape, we only see the final piece: the polished book, the curated exhibition, the completed film. The process is often invisible, an afterthought, lost behind the scenes.

obrar exists to change that.

Each of our books is a site of construction. They exist as place where thinking and making unfold together. A space where the unfinished is as meaningful as the finished.
